With people becoming more and more addicted to the internet and devices, one of the most important questions out there is whether or not kids need an iPhone. This is the same device that can pull up information about anything right at your fingertips, and can allow you to literally contact anyone in the world with this device.
In my eyes, I do not believe kids need an iPhone or any smartphone at all. The reason why is that it turns into the child’s entertainment center and takes away from things such as playing outside, riding bikes, going to the pool, etc. One could say that it takes away imagination and creativity from young kids. Little kids do not need to be constantly connected to the internet, there is simply no adequate reason for it. It turns the iPhone into the parent for the kid. Sure it knows more than the parents, but it becomes the child’s life. It relies and becomes attached to it.
Now here is where the numbers and costs come into play. Even with a base-model iPhone SE, it still costs $399. Also, along with paying the price of the phone, parents still have the monthly bill. That’s not attractive to parents. There are many other products that Apple makes that are cheaper and will do the job just fine for kids.
With all of that said though, these are still electronic devices and given that most kids are very savvy with these kinds of things, they will be able access stuff that is not meant for their young innocent eyes. This includes pornography, chat rooms, and inappropriate TV shows. I should also include that having a device like an iPhone can give a kid an entry way into cyberbullying, whether it be through texting, Facebook, or any other sort of digital communication.
All in all, if you have a son or daughter that is practically begging you for a new iPhone and they are in elementary-early high school (freshman or sophomore), then tell that they do not need one. They’ll feel like you are the worst parent in the world and pretend to hate your guts, but you’re doing it for their own protection. If push comes to shove, get your kid a simply flip-phone. It’ll save money because you won’t be paying for a smartphone and data, and it will teach your kid responsibility. Their day for owning a smartphone will come, they just have to be patient until that time comes.
